Professional Development

Our QM Alaska System of institutions offers collaborative online training for both the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop and the Improving Your Online Course (IYOC) workshop.

The “Designing Your Online Course” (DYOC) workshop includes an overview of the QM Rubric and provides a framework for participants to design an online course plan. Integral to the workshop is exploration of the eight General Standards of the QM Rubric, focusing on learning objectives and overall course alignment. Participants will complete a Course Development Plan.  See our Events Calendar for the dates and registration of the next DYOC workshop.

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) is a rigorous, two-week, asynchronous course for faculty, administrators, and staff to become familiar with the QM rubric and how the standards inform online course design. Participants will leave with specific and measurable ways to improve their online courses. The time commitment to complete the workshop is 10-15 hours each week of the two-week course. This workshop is the first required step in becoming a certified peer reviewer.  The APPQMR workshop runs asynchronously on QM’s Canvas LMS.  See our Events Calendar for the dates and registration of the next APPQMR workshop.

  • This workshop is presented as a fully asynchronous online course or a synchronous one-day session either in person, or virtually via Zoom.*

The “Improving Your Online Course” (IYOC) workshop explores the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and provides a framework to improve the quality of online and blended courses. Participants use the QM Rubric to review their own online/blended courses and develop a course improvement plan. The UA QM IYOC workshop can fulfill a preliminary course review role in preparing for a formally recognized QM Course Review.  Participants come away with a plan for course improvement, so they are required to have a pre-developed online or blended course to use throughout the workshop.

The IYOC workshop runs asynchronously on QM’s Canvas LMS. All participants will be connected with a UA instructional designer to help them complete changes to their course(s). This workshop requires a time commitment of at least 10-12 hours per week.

See our Events Calendar for the dates and registration of the next IYOC online workshop.

* Some events are available virtually during COVID-19

Each campus in our QM Alaska System has the opportunity to run on-campus classroom versions of the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop and the Improving Your Online Course (IYOC) workshop.  These workshops usually run as one-day sessions. For upcoming dates and locations, please see our Events Calendar or contact the QM Coordinator on your campus.

Quality Matters (QM) offers a wide variety of workshops, courses, webinars, and events.  Most of these have a tuition cost; however, each of our institutions has a professional development budget that might accommodate some extra training.  If you are interested in any additional QM professional development opportunities, please talk with the QM Coordinator at your campus/institution.
